08.07.2024 Maeshowe Burial Chamber.

Having gone to the Maeshowe Visitor Centre at the weekend, Master was hoping to get on the tour on Monday morning. He had to be there for 9.30. Missus had decided she didn't want to go as the entrance passage is very long and her knees felt bruised after our visit to Unstan Tomb. So master went off to the visitors centre to see if he could get on a tour. He soon sent a message to say that he was on the 10am tour. The weather looked promising and it turned into a lovely warm sunny day.

Meanwhile, Missus and I stayed at home, we were trying to find out where the pattern had gone wrong on the 'Shepherds Plaid' design. We decided it had been a lack of concentration and Missus was not going to take it apart several rows that would cause chaos! So we soldiered on and got the pattern back on track. Missus is knitting a Sampler Scarf of 'Sanquhar' designs, its all done in Black and White. Hope she doesn't make a mess of any more patterns! (You Cheeky Bear!).

When Master came home he said to Missus that she could get in there quite easily, bent double and bent knees with her hands on them and walk in. Still it was time for lunch, so Master and Missus went to lunch at the Pier Head Bistro again and had lunch. Master had Fish and Chips and Missus the Chicken curry. After that they went in search of a pharmacy in town. Missus knew she had seen one, but they both managed to walk right by it. So when they got nearly to the end of the High Street they turned round and found someone standing at his shop door. he gave them directions and this time they found it. There was a very tatty sign outside declaring 'Sutherlands Pharmacy' , it smelt quite musty inside too. Still Missus was able to get what she wanted.

When they got home again Missus said she wanted to go to Maeshowe. So we all set off for the visitors centre to see if we could get on the 6pm tour. We could get on that one, Yippee. The man in the centre asked if we were Scottish Heritage members, No we replied, Missus said we were English Heritage members. That got us in for free. Missus hadn't got her card with her, so we dashed home to get it and went back to show the card. When we got there the 4pm tour was just about to leave and we had a pleasant surprise, we could go on that tour instead of later. The tour leader was pleased that Morgan and I were going on the tour as well. Sadly we can't remember her name but it was a very interesting talk from her. A coach took us down the road to a park opposite the entrance to the path, we had to cross the road and walk along by a field to get there. Master was right. With the right technique Missus and I navigated the passageway easily. We had to stand up when we got to the light the tour guide was shining on the floor inside. Maeshowe had certainly had an interesting history, with possibly all sorts of things taking place inside.  The Passageway had been sealed up possibly by the people who built it and for many hundreds of years the only way in was through the roof. There is plenty of Runic Graffiti o.n various stones in there. Some of the most recent was when the Vikings had started to embrace Christianity. There are 3 animal carvings said to be of a Lion, Walrus or Seal and a Serpent. The Lion however has been interpreted as a Dragon by people, so now it is called the Maeshowe Dragon and the shop at the visitors centre depicts it as a Dragon. I wanted another badge for my jumper so Missus bought me one, a lovely Silver Dragon Badge. Also the visitor centre had a stamp of Maeshowe and they stamped Morgan and my passports.

Maeshowe Cain and Henge

Me with my badges. I have Ness of Brodgar, Scarpa Flow Museum and my lovely silver Dragon from Maeshowe. The other badges are my European Bee Eater badge. The Bee Eaters came to Norfolk in 2023 and the other is to celebrate 125 years of Wicken Fen this year.
