30.06.2024 A day in Stromness

Image
Oh dear it like the wet and windy weather is continuing Boo-hoo. Still there are indoor pursuits  available and today we are going to the Stromness Museum. we found it ok, parking was a bit of an issue, but the lady on reception allowed us to park on the slipway beside the museum so missus didn't have far to walk. The museum has two and a half floors and had been the Town Hall at one time with the Natural History Society occupying the top floor ( see Photo). So we decided to start at the top then come down. The top floor was mainly Natural History, not just of Orkney though. There was a Gorilla Scull and a collection of Butterflies from far off lands. The skull was very scary, it was bigger than mine. There were some interesting artifacts, purchased by The Rev. George Low from James Cook's ships when they visited in August-September 1780. They too are on display on the top floor. Artifacts from James cooks ships Resolution and Discovery bought by The Rev. George Low. Also on...

29.06.2024 Tiger in the garden and Kirkwall

Image
Well we all felt refreshed after a good nights sleep. Alas a look outside and the weather hadn't refreshed, it was still blowing a hooley and raining. Missus had been up earlier and had stood at the door watching a beautiful Tabby Cat hunting in the garden, hence calling it a Tiger. The garden is a wild affair, where one as small as me could get easily lost. It was the same colour as a Scottish Wild Cat, with a dark line down its back an a short tail, but she thought its build was too light for it to be a wild cat. She didn't get her camera out as she didn't want it to see her. This place has an interesting garden There is a Crenellated wall atop a steep rise at one end and what appears to be an decorative gateway to the other side of the garden. So we are keeping ours eyes on the garden in case it comes back again. Missus said that the grass camouflaged it beautifully. Master and Missus had tea in bed and we went and joined them. After a breakfast of muesli and Blueberrie...

28.06.2024 Journey into the unknown, the NC500 and the arrival at our final destination

Well, we were all up bright and early, breakfast at 7am at the Premier inn and packed into the car by 8am and we were off. It was very sunny but the wind was blowing a Hooley! The car was taken to the fuel station and given a drink, at least it wouldn't run out on our journey. The Scenery is do different now, mountains. whoever was driving today had to hang onto the car's steering wheel to keep it on the correct side of the road. There were lots of warning signs about the wind and bridge closures to Double Decker Busses. Hills and lots of them today. this is just outside Berwick. This journey took us through beautiful countryside some times along by the sea. We saw fleeting glimpses of the Bass Rock on our way to Edinburgh. This has one of the largest Gannet colonies in the UK. Missus said they had been decimated by Bird Flu in the previous year. She thinks it is still around. However there were survivors of the flu and Missus tells me their eyes turned Black, amazing!   ...

27.06.2024 the journey to Berwick-upon-Tweed

Image
Well we are off on our holiday to Orkney at last. Master, Missus, Morgan Moose and Me Charly Bear. Missus does all my typing for me as my paws are rather stubby and small. I'm starting this blog 3days in to our journey as we only got to our destination yesterday evening 28.06.2024, but am keeping the days separate. Master has found a shorter route to the A1 road it takes us up through Lincolnshire on the A17 and onto the A1 at Newark. I found looking out at the Lincolnshire countryside very interesting, it was the Lincolnshire Fens. As flat as the Cambridgeshire fens but the soil wasn't black.                                                    The flat Lincolnshire countryside It is obviously very fertile land as a great many things are grown there. We saw fields of Cereals and the Barley was turning to gold, fields of Potatoes and other vegetables. I t...
